ERIAS successfully executed a deep-water oceanographic work program for Moana Minerals within the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone in February 2026, reinforcing our capability in complex offshore environments. Operating at depths exceeding 5,000 metres, the scope included oceanographic mooring recoveries, data acquisition, equipment servicing, and system redeployment to support ongoing monitoring programs. The data collected contributes to critical baseline oceanographic understanding, enabling evidence-based decision-making for nodule resource development.
Despite challenging remote offshore locations, extreme water depths, and dynamic weather, the ERIAS Marine Team demonstrated strong technical performance, adaptability, and operational resilience throughout the campaign. This success was underpinned by the continued support of Moana Minerals, alongside the coordinated efforts of offshore crews and onshore support teams.
We’re proud to share this testimonial from Nicole Frani, reflecting on her experience as part of the Moana Minerals Ltd Expedition 7 team in the Cook Islands.
“I recently had the privilege of being part of the Moana Minerals Expedition 7 team in the Cook Islands. Beginning in my home country of Papua New Guinea and crossing the International Date Line to join an international team offshore. This expedition was both an unforgettable experience and a significant milestone in my career.”
My role focused on supporting the physical and chemical assessment of sediment samples collected during the expedition. This involved processing sediment cores, conducting in-situ measurements, documenting observations, and preparing samples for specialised laboratory analysis.
Along the way we encountered some fascinating discoveries including a Megladon tooth and macrofauna associated with polymetallic nodules, providing a glimpse into the biodiversity and geological history of the study area. Beyond the science, one of the most rewarding aspects of the expedition was collaborating with experts from around the world. Learning from their experience and sharing stories, cultures, music and even favourite snacks during long shifts at sea made the experience truly memorable.

The expedition reinforced the value of curiosity, continuous learning and teamwork in field environments. I am grateful to my team leads, colleagues and everyone involved for the opportunity to contribute and grow both professionally and personally.”
A fantastic achievement by Nicole and the entire expedition team. We’re proud to our ERIAS team contributing to world-class research and international collaboration.
