ERIAS was appointed as the Independent Monitor (IM) for the McArthur River Mine for a five-year period until December 2019. The IM represents an essential commitment of the Northern Territory Government to the community for independent oversight of environmental management and monitoring by the operator and the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade as the regulator.
The IM provides a level of transparency to the management activities of the Department in regulating the and Operator and communicating to the community environmental performance of the mine and protecting the health of McArthur River.
The ERIAS team consisting of specialists in surface water, groundwater, geochemistry, geomorphology, geotechnical, aquatic ecology (freshwater and marine), terrestrial ecology, air quality and mine closure undertook environmental audits and published annual IM reports providing an independent assessment of the environmental performance of the McArthur River Mine including recommendations for improvements.
